To commemorate the launch of IAYG’s Why Geography Matters series, we asked the twelve finalists of the Kerala Geography and Global Studies Challenge to share why geography matters to them in this short interview before the competition began. Read what their answers are:

Harith Mohan – Class 7

I think geography is important because it tells us to learn about our surroundings and the principles in which water, everything is running.

Johanna Esther – Class 8

I think that geography is important because we have to have a better appreciation of Earth and how Earth and nature works around us and about Earth’s limitations. If we continue using all the supplies and natural resources, it will soon be extinguished so we have to learn about Earth’s limitations.

Vinay S – Class 7

I think that geography is important because if you do not learn about your surroundings, we cannot learn how to protect them and therefore, we should learn to contribute to the conservation of the Earth.

Kishan Sivdas – Class 7

I think that geography is really important because it is the only way to know the world we live in. I got interested in geography because of my atlas, it was very informative.

Rhea Ann Roy – Class 9

Geography is important because it’s much more than what we see in textbooks and what we learn about it in school. It is really interesting to learn about.

Rohit Rakesh – Class 9

I think that geography is important because we can know about other countries, their culture, and different kinds of languages et cetera

Shivshankar A – Class 10

Geography is important because it helps us to understand the connection between earth, society, and the subject itself. Then understanding geography helps us to connect to people around us and geography is the study of surroundings. Where we need to go, we need to understand the landscape of that particular area

Adithya A – Class 9

I feel geography is crucial because it shares a symbiotic relationship with many modern applications and sciences.

Deekshita S – Class 9

Geography helps us to understand the basic physical systems of everyday life. And how I got interested in geography is that we can explore our earth, though we cannot go to all the places, we can dream through.

Surya R – Class 9

I think geography is important because if we don’t know the physical features, climate, and all, we cannot know how to use the place and whether it can hold everything or whether it has some limitations and all.

Gautham Krishna K – Class 11

I think geography is important because it helps us appreciate our world better. It helps us understand different places, even the cultures. So I think we should give more focus to geography in our studies, in our education. Which is not actually given any importance.

Padmanabh M.R – Class 9

I think geography is important because it is related to the physical features of the world and the various phenomenons that take place which is important for our survival
